Overview
BSG Ecology worked with the Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes project team to successfully deliver an orchid translocation scheme as part of the consented Biodiversity Strategy for a large-scale residential development on the outskirts of Burley in Wharfedale, West Yorkshire.
Challenge
In 2021, Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes obtained planning consent for the delivery of over 475 residential homes in an area of former farmland on the outskirts of Burley in Wharfedale; covering an area over 25 ha. A condition attached to the permission included the retention and protection of important ecological features during the construction, including common spotted orchid and southern marsh orchids recorded on Site during the suite of ecology surveys that had been undertaken prior to the submission. Construction Ecological Management Plan and Ecological Design Strategy documents were produced by BSG Ecology, which were both approved and adopted in May 2022, detailing the methods of protection, translocation and aftercare for the area of orchid-rich grassland.
Delivery of the orchid translocation scheme was met with various challenges due to the seasonal restrictions imposed by weather, adverse ground conditions and conflicts with the surrounding construction activities. Taking into account the conditions on Site and BSG’s past experience of translocating orchids it was clear that a site-specific, carefully planned methodology would be required to ensure the successful establishment of the translocated orchids.
Solution
BSG Ecology adopted a pro-active approach throughout the translocation process; site meetings were held with specialist contractors, regular Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) site visits were conducted and open communications were maintained with the client team and the Local Planning Authority to identify solutions, which allowed for successful orchid translocation whilst the surrounding construction activities continued to schedule.
In late summer 2022, BSG supervised the excavation of receptor depressions for the orchids to be translocated into. The ECoW advised upon an appropriate design to retain moisture more readily and provide suitable conditions for the orchids. Following the cutting and translocation of the first of the orchid turves, the project was faced with severe flooding; saturated ground conditions continued through autumn and winter, requiring the translocation scheme to be delayed until spring 2023. The ECoW maintained communication with the client team and contractors through this period, which allowed works to recommence at the first possible opportunity. Disruption to the construction schedule was avoided and orchid translocation proceeded during optimal conditions which gave them the maximum chance of survival. In spring 2023, translocation of turves was completed and any gaps between the turves were supplemented with sowing an appropriate wet grassland wildflower mix.
A key element to the successful delivery of the scheme was involvement of an ECoW with sufficient experience and specialist knowledge who could provide advice and make decisions on site during the translocation process.
Outcome
Following completion of the orchid translocation scheme, the turves have settled in well and small colonies of southern marsh orchids were recorded in June 2023 and 2024. Regular monitoring will continue as the development continues into the next phases of construction and long term management plans are in place with regard to all elements of habitat creation to ensure the Biodiversity Strategy is fulfilled.
Testimonial
Barratt Developments had the pleasure of working with BSG Ecology on an extensive ecology survey and orchid replanting project. We cannot express enough how impressed we were with their expertise and dedication.
From the initial consultation, BSG Ecology demonstrated a profound understanding of the local ecosystem and the delicate balance required to preserve and enhance it. Their team conducted a thorough and meticulous ecology survey, identifying key areas of concern and providing actionable insights that were both comprehensive and easy to understand.
The orchid replanting initiative was particularly impressive. BSG Ecology’s team approached this task with a blend of scientific knowledge and genuine care for the environment. They carefully selected suitable locations for replanting, ensuring the new habitats would support the orchids’ growth and sustainability. Throughout the project, they maintained clear communication, keeping us informed about their progress and any challenges they encountered.
Thanks to BSG Ecology’s exceptional work, the transplanted orchids are thriving in their new environment. Their professionalism, knowledge, and dedication have made a significant impact.
