Susie joined BSG Ecology in March 2023.
Susie has experience conducting a range of ecological surveys for protected species including great crested newts (Level 1 survey class licence holder), reptiles, bats (Level 2 qualification in Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue), badger, otter and water vole, and habitat surveys.
Susie has an undergraduate degree in Conservation Biology from the University of Plymouth. She completed her dissertation on the identification of cryptic white-tailed bumblebees using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis to understand foraging niches and habitat preferences. Susie completed a Masters by Research in Entomology at the University of Reading where she gained taxonomic skills for a wide range of insect orders and completed two research projects focusing on plant insect interactions.
She is a keen entomologist in her spare time and has an insect collection of over 300 specimens. She is one of the Entomology leads in the Oxford team and is working towards a specialism in aculeate identification. She has previously assisted with PHD projects working as a field assistant conducting plant and pollinator surveys on calcareous grasslands, and pollinator sampling of hawthorn trees in Wytham Woods (Jackson et al., 2025).
