22 Nov Promotion of the Profession: Engaging with University Students
Over the last few weeks ecologists from our Newport and Derbyshire offices have been representing BSG Ecology at the Swansea University Science Careers Fair and Nottingham Trent University’s Life Sciences and Environment Fair.
Both of these events provided an excellent opportunity to meet with undergraduate and post-graduate students from across environmental and life sciences courses and provide advice to students who are considering a career in the sector. Our ecologists were able to answer questions about working within a consultancy and the opportunities we have available for early career ecologists at BSG.
At Swansea University students also presented posters reflecting on their placements, showcasing a variety of experiences across different elements of the life sciences sector. The displays allowed ecologists Zoe and Dan to engage with the students and understand how their degree is helping them to shape their career choices.
Dan Watson, Senior Ecologist said “The Swansea Science Careers Fair provided a great opportunity to engage with bioscience students and listen to how their placements had influenced their future career aspirations. We met a lot of engaged and enthusiastic young scientists and enjoyed talking with them about the careers and opportunities BSG Ecology can offer – hopefully we will hear from some of them in the near future!”
Fiona Shuttle, Senior Ecologist said “It was great to engage with so many students at the Nottingham Trent University Careers Fair, we hope they will take away some of our tips and advice, enabling them to make informed decisions about their careers and be more aware of their options and possible next steps into the industry. It is reassuring to see such enthusiasm in the next generation of ecologists!”
