Sharing Learning & Good Practice: Biodiversity Gain & Minerals – Presenting At The Minerals Planning Conference 2023

BSG Director Kirsty Kirkham was among the speakers at this year’s joint MPA RTPI Minerals Planning Conference held in London on 15 June.

This year’s conference focused on how minerals planning is at a crossroads and the range of issues and challenges facing the profession over the coming years. Kirsty’s presentation addressed the forthcoming biodiversity net gain (BNG) requirements under the Environment Act 2021, how they may be applied to minerals and the challenges and opportunities of using the “one-size fits all” metric based approach. Kirsty considered ‘accidental’ habitat baseline values of minerals sites that have been worked previously and shared the potential approach that could be applied to different types of minerals planning applications for existing quarries, extensions or new quarry sites.
