01 Feb Supporting Professional Development: PostGIS Training Course
The BSG Ecology GIS Team recently completed a PostGIS training course with Lutra Consulting. The aim of the training was to enhance the team’s understanding of how our bespoke cloud-based database, Juniper, functions. This will allow for more efficient data processing and analysis going forward.
The training covered all the elements needed to conduct analysis within QGIS including an introduction to pgAdmin software, interrogating data using Structured Query Language (SQL), importing and exporting data from the Juniper database and joining data from multiple tables together within a single query to create smart, informative outputs.
During the training the team were able to apply skills they had acquired to analysing some of BSG’s datasets. One exercise used BSG’s ornithological dataset in the pgAdmin database to produce an output table using SQL, enabling the data to be analysed more quickly and in greater depth compared to standard methods, speeding up the workflow as a result.
Feedback:
“I found the PostGIS database training very good, and it has really helped me understand the workings of our Juniper database. The training will help me greatly moving forward and I definitely feel more confident performing various PostGIS tasks. Would highly recommend this course for anyone looking to expand their know-how in GIS.” – Billy, GIS Technician
“The training session was an excellent way to advance our knowledge of QGIS, as well as introducing us to the behind-the-scenes database that make up our Juniper system. Through the training, it became clear that stand alone QGIS software can be developed into a very powerful database system to manage, analyse and manipulate datasets, and enable optimum usage and outputs for BSG Ecology.” – Ciara, GIS Technician
