16 Jul Promotion of the Profession: Engaging with secondary school students
BSG Ecology recently attended the careers fair at Oxford Spires Academy, a secondary school in East Oxford. With the development of a forthcoming GCSE in Natural History this seemed a good opportunity to showcase to students in Years 7-12 the opportunities that a career in ecology can offer. As well as providing an opportunity for pupils to find out what an ecologist does, the event also gave the students a chance to meet and talk to employers.
We had a range of material including various skulls, feathers, insects, plants and bats (held under licence). We also showed them trail camera footage of a badger scratching an itch and of Daubenton’s bats foraging over Blenheim Lake. These collectively attracted a lot of attention, excitement, and questions. Encouragingly, there were a few budding ornithologists who were able to identify the bird feathers and botanists who made a good attempt to identify trees. Many more of the students just wanted to know what an ecologist does.
Dr Peter Shepherd, Director (and school parent) said “This was the first time we have attended the Careers Fair, and we didn’t know what to expect. However, time flew by and it was really good to see the mixture of surprise, knowledge and interest that our material generated amongst the students. Hopefully we have opened their eyes to the fact that an interest in the natural world can develop into a career. Once the new GCSE in Natural History is launched it appears there will be quite a few takers. We would be happy to support the school to make it happen”
