01 Oct Volunteering at Boundary Brook Nature Reserve
BSG Ecology’s Oxford team recently took part in a volunteer morning at Boundary Brook Nature Reserve, run by the Oxford Urban Wildlife Group (OUWG). The reserve, created in 1990 from disused allotments, is a three acre Site of Conservation Interest in East Oxford. Several members of the team at BSG know the Reserve well and have previously organised reptile and amphibian training for staff and local volunteers.
Management activities at the Reserve include wetland and grassland creation, and the OUWG has recently been shortlisted for an award by Oxford Preservation Trust in recognition of their work on the Grassland Enhancement and Living Libraries project funded by the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment.
The day started with an overview from the chair of the OUWG, Helen Edwards followed by everyone getting involved in a variety of tasks including raking and collecting grass cuttings, creating hibernaculum, removing encroaching bramble along path edges notoriously hard to remove pendulous sedge in the woodlands.
The volunteering day was a great opportunity to contribute to the Reserve’s ongoing management work and learn more about their conservation initiatives. We look forward to working with the OUWG at the reserve in the future.
