Early October saw the whole team travel to the Peak District to celebrate our 26th year of operation.

Our venue for much of the get together was Thornbridge Hall, a Jacobean-style country house set in formal gardens. Here we had a morning of talks and discussion about some of our more interesting and challenging projects and what we have learned from them.

The Newport team recently enjoyed a teambuilding morning at Wye Valley Archery Centre to celebrate a successful year. The Archery Centre is in the beautiful Wye Valley, surrounded by natural broadleaved woodland and home to the lonely Runston Chapel, which is owned by Cadw.

In August student Vicky Jamieson joined the Derbyshire team for two weeks of ecological consultancy work experience. Vicky, who is currently studying Ecology and Conservation at Lancaster University, was eager to get an insight into what working as an ecologist entails and to gain experience in bat and botanical surveys which are of particular interest to her.

BSG Ecology is delighted to be delivering Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC) in partnership with the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI). BSG’s first two assessment days took place in May and July this year, with sixteen of our ecologists coming together from across the practice to undertake the day-long test.

We are thrilled that Director Kirsty Kirkham has been named as one of the Top 100 most influential environmental professionals in the UK, on the ENDS Report Power list 2023. The ENDS Power list highlights individuals who have made the greatest impact over the last two years in the environmental sector. Kirsty’s inclusion on the Power list recognises her work with the minerals industry to drive thinking and help shape the biodiversity gain assessment process at a national level.

BSG recently supported two of our Ecologists, Emily McVean and Sophie Vickress, through their tree climbing and aerial rescue qualification (City & Guilds NPTC 0039-22). They join an experienced team of ecologists based across the company who are licenced and qualified to climb trees and undertake surveys for bat roosts. Earlier this year BSG ran an in-house training session to share knowledge and demonstrate safe and efficient methods of undertaking aerial inspection of trees.
